This story is an absolute homerun in my book. I truly enjoyed every aspect of it. The writing is flawless as always, the characters complex and very intriguing, the chemistry between them hot and palpable. Add the baseball background and I was sold immediately. I love baseball, and have read a few really good baseball stories. Now I found one more gem! But don't worry if you are not a fan, the book has the perfect balance, giving a bit of insight, but not overwhelming.My heart was breaking for Nico at the very beginning, and I think the writer did a brilliant job solving all the issues in the most heartwarming way. This is a true feel-good story, so don't expect lots of angst. It's more about inner struggles and how to overcome personal issues with the help of the right person. The build-up is perfectly paced, the way Jake and Nico reconnect and form a relationship, changing, forming, helping each other is very well written. The secondary characters are wonderful and the sense of family and friendship add an extra layer of awesomeness. Highly recommended!

First thing, the characters make the book. And the characters are real. A problem I have is that a lot of romance authors tend to make the gay couples into a stereotypical man and little woman behaviorally. Or they both end up.being teenage girls writing hearts all over everything.
These characters are both men. And they are, each of them, individuals with their own flaws and voices. They are also not stereotypical except in that the smaller and younger man ends up being the more submissive one. But it works. Very nice work with that.
Secondary characters are also interesting and real. Again, nice work.
Lots of interesting dialogue. Not a lot of boring internal monologues. Thank you. Writing that is crisp and flows without a problem. All this makes for a good read.
I read a lot of hockey m/m romance and I love the Quarterbackverse (run, don't walk to find it on line) football fic, but I'm not a baseball fan, so I haven't read much baseball-based romance. But I would read more if they all were like Reading the Signs. I really liked this book and it was very well written. I had several DFNs lately - just ridiculous plots or juvenile writing - so Reading the Signs was a relief. I'll admit that I skimmed some of the baseball stuff, but there wasn't too much, so I didn't feel like I was skipping huge chunks of the book or bored. I liked the secondary characters and felt most of them were more than one dimensional. I enjoyed the growth of both MCs. They each had some pretty tough things they needed to do to get their lives on track.
The big reveal at the end was met with far too many smiles, back slaps and rainbow flags waved. Very unrealistic in professional sports and it almost had an "everyone is totally fine with it and happy for you" fairy tale quality. But, I guess if I wanted real life, I should be watching the news these days. There's plenty of horrifying things on there right now. I'll just hide away in the HEAs.

Hotness, and feels! Love it!
I loved the attraction, romance and relationship between Nico and Jake. I love that Nico had been carrying a torch for Jake for years, and then finally getting his teenage crush for reals. I felt so bad for Nico and all the thoughts and guilt he had been carrying around for all those years. I liked how it was resolved with his family, but my heart aches thinking of the emotional baggage he grew up with, that he didn't need to have had. Jake was lovely as strong, and confident. I loved the age gap between them. The sex was truly sizzling! I love that Jake was dominating, and I love that Nico wanted to submit just as badly. I loved his naked desire for it, and his embrace of it.
I would have loved to give this book 4 stars, but there was too much technical baseball talk for me. I have no idea how baseball is played, only they use a bat and a baseball (duh), and they run around the field. So paragraphs like the one below, just goes over my head.

"Nico was in control of the ballgame. That was until the top of the eight, when he gave up a walk and then a line drive that allowed the pinch runner to get from first to third with one out. The home crowd murmured, and Jake knew they were wondering if Skip [the coach] would make the walk out to the mound to give Nico the hook. Nico had thrown a great game, hanging in for more innings then usual for a starter, his pitch count fairly low."
I know, I know, it is a baseball book, and I knew this going in, but I've read other sports themed books where I don't know the rules of the game (American Football, or hockey), and they have been fine. So it's entirely possible for me to read a book about a sport I don't know, and still find it enjoyable. This book, though, was just too much. I found myself zoning out, and skimming through most of those paragraphs, unfortunately.
So, loved the Jake and Nico parts, but the baseball parts, not so much.
Would still recommend, because this is Keira Andrews after all! D
I loved this one, possibly on a five star level, until the last few chapters when it rushed to end in what has become the ultimate cliche ending of sports romance in this genre (Seriously, how have authors not realized every single one of them is writing the same thing?). I didn't even feel like it truly suited this story; for me it almost felt tacked on to get the book over with in place of a real ending that would have dealt more with the relationship and its issues, rather than an abrupt sprint to a finish that didn't seem to really fit any of the arcs. The last four chapters or so kind of just ruined this entire book for me.
